Kishimoto Akihiko started potting professionally in June 1973 and was nominated for his first prize at a Japanese Craft Association exhibition the following October. This vase comes without a box but with the Japanese information sheet shown above. The hidasuki (fire cord) decoration is a typical form of decoration used in Bizen and is achieved by wrapping rice straw soaked in salt water around the vase before firing. During the firing the straw is burnt away and the salt reacts with the red clay to form the brighter red streak of glaze seen above.
