Takenaka Kenji was born in Okayama in 1957 and graduated from the Okayama Industrial Laboratory in 1986. In 1988 he started to study under Isezaki Jun, who is currently the Bizen National Living Treasure, and stay with him for over five years. During this time he was accepted for numerous exhibitions and won prizes so it was only a matter of time before he began potting on his own. In 1993 he started to build his own kiln and became fully independent the following year. Since then he has had numerous solo exhibitions around Japan and his stock has risen. This yunomi is a little different from much of his work, which is fired unglazed in typical Bizen fashion, but it does show a sculptural form that Takenaka has investigated throughout his career. The yunomi comes with its own wooden box, as shown, together with a cleaning cloth on which his seal mark is also stamped. It is unused and marked on the base by Takenaka (at 1 o’clock in the last image).
