Hirose Tanga was born in 1939 and is still working from his kiln, Tenpozan-gama. He has exhibited widely in Japan and elsewhere and his work is held by the Brooklyn Museum in the USA.

Hagi ware is closely associated with the Tea Ceremony in
Japan and this teabowl (chawan) is a fine example of crackle glazed wares that are one of the typical effects used in Hagi pottery. Besides the signed wooden box, which does have some marks due to the age of the chawan, there is also a cleaning cloth with Hirose sanís seal mark.
