Umeda Toraku studied with the well known Hagi potter, Saka Koraizaemon, and established his own kiln in the village of Otsugun, not far from Hagi, in 1974. Umeda most certainly gained a considerable reputation in the area, as the kiln has become known as Umeda Toraku-gama and was succeeded to by his younger brother, Yasuhiko, in 1999. I am not sure whether Toraku passed away in that year or just retired from potting, although the former is most likely.
