Kawai Seitoku was a Kyoto based potter who was born in 1927 and died in 2010. His style of painted wares is a traditional style of the city and has its roots in the 17th century work of the famous potters, Nonomura Ninsei and Kenzan Ogata. Kawai Seitoku had a long career, gaining his first major honour at the 1962 Nitten. In 1975 he was awarded a medal of honour by the Japanese government and this vase appears to have been made around 5 years later. The vase has Kawai-sanís signature painted on its base and the elaborate box with a sliding lid also has his signature and seal inside the lid.
