Shibata Tadashi was born in Tanba in1933 but his pottery career has been based in Seto where this chawan was made. The technique used for making this chawan is known as “neriage”. This is an ancient Japanese technique of layering, cutting and recombining different colours of clay, creating an intricately patterned loaf that is sliced and applied to the clay body.

Shibata has been accepted for inclusion in Nitten exhibitions of several occasions.
