Fujiwara Shunichi uses glazes as well as relying on the
effect of the wood firing process to produce his work. The chawan (teabowl)
has what is known as a “cinnabar” glaze inside and just over the outer edges.
The glaze of course does not contain cinnabar, which has a similar red
colour, as this is Mercuric Sulphide, which is extremely toxic. The teabowl
has the impressed mark in the unglazed area just outside the foot ring, which
isn’t visible in the image.
