Kato Hajimu did not
begin to pot seriously until he was 40 years old when he left the family
firm, built an anagama kiln and concentrated on becoming a ceramic artist.
Since then he has achieved considerable fame and his work was selected for
inclusion in the major exhibition of Shigaraki Pottery, the Great Shigaraki
Exhibition, held in Japan during
2001. The yunomi above is made from the local sandy clay, which is
characterised by the quartz fragments it contains that partly fuse during the
firing process. Kato-sanís applied seal mark can be seen in the last image
just below the foot ring.
