Tani Seiuemon was born in Shigaraki in 1913 and lived to a significant age. He has passed away but I have not been able to find the exact date. Both his son and grandson currently pot, carrying on the family tradition. Tani-san became interested in the local pottery when he was a young man and worked for many years both excavating ancient kilns and researching the tradition skills used. This resulted in him being instrumental in the revival of Shigaraki pottery in the last part of the 20th century. He opened his own half submerged kiln in 1970 and concentrated on the Ko-Shigaraki style, which emphasises ash glaze effects, as seen on this vase. He held many exhibitions during his lifetime and his work is held in the Shigaraki National Museum.
