Tanii Hozan
was born in Gojo-shi, Nara Prefecture in 1953 and graduated from Osaka University of Arts and Crafts in 1975. He built his first kiln in Shigaraki in 1981 and then succeeded to the Tanikan kiln, which was opened around 1870, in 1983 after marrying the previous potter’s daughter.
Tanii’s original work is glazed and this he continues to make to this day but in 2000 he built a wood fired anagama kiln in which this yunomi was produced. The yunomi comes with its own card box and you will note that besides the impressed potter’s seal near the foot ring there is also a seal on hand made paper with an exhibition number that relates to his London exhibition in March 2013.
