Soga Hakuan was born in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture in 1945 and graduated from its Ceramics High School in 1964. Since then he has continued to live, pot and exhibit there, as well as take part in numerous exhibitions elsewhere in Japan. In Tokoname he has received the Traditional Craft Industries Merit medal as well as the Governor’s Award for Traditional Craft technical excellence. This teabowl has a Nezumi (mouse-coloured) Shino glaze and has the potter’s personal incised mark on the base just outside the foot ring. It comes with its own signed and inscribed wooden box that has further written information on the hand made paper box cover.
