Tanaka Akira is a Japanese potter that I know
nothing about but the shear quality of this chawan bowled me over. I believe
that it was made around 1990 and is unusual in that it is salt glazed (en-yu) a process that was only really introduced into Japan during the 1950s through Shoji
Hamada’s association with Bernard Leach. The chawan has an impressed seal
just outside the foot ring and comes with a high quality signed wooden box.
