Wakana Motoko was born
in Tokyo in 1962
and, after a spell working in England,
returned to Japan at the end
of 2005. This yunomi was made in Saitama Prefecture, around 20 miles north of
Central Tokyo, where Motoko lives. Currently, she
is passing on her skills by teaching ceramics in Tokyo as well
as making her own work.
This yunomi in made using the “mishima” technique where the incised pattern
is filled with a different coloured slip. Motoko’s personal seal is impressed
inside the foot ring but it is not possible to see in the image above, as it
is under the glaze. In can be seen when tilted in the light.
