Yamaoka Takanobu V is, as his title suggests, the fifth holder of this name working in Saga Prefecture and this chawan appears to be between 20 and 30 years old. The box is of fine quality with details about the kiln and potter on the outside and inside of the lid. The kiln used by Yamaoka is a wood fired climbing kiln and the stoneware clay used is high in iron. The chawan has iron based brush decoration under the glaze and the impressed seal can be seen in the final image just outside the foot ring.
